අපේ රට යන අත හොඳද නරක ද?
මල ඉලව් දේශපාලනය ගැන ආයේ ලියන්නෙම නෑ කියලා හිතන් හිටියේ. ෆොටෝ එකක් දාලා වීඩියෝ එකක් දාලා පහුගිය ටිකේ මම සාමයෙන් සමාදානයෙන් හිටියා නේ. මේ කාලේ අහන්න ලැබෙන දේවල් නිසා ලියන්නම හිතුණා.
අපිට සීයට සීයක් එකඟ වෙන්න පුලුවන් පාලනයක් හදන්න නම් අපිම ගිහින් රජ වෙන්න ඕනේ. ඉතින් මම රජ උනොත් මොකද වෙන්නේ? ඡන්දෙ හම්බෙනවද නැත්ද කියන එක අමතක කරලා මම රජ උණා කියලා හිතමුකෝ...
කීදෙනෙකුට මාව එපා වෙයිද? මොන උප්පරවැට්ටියක් කරලා හරි කිරිපිටි නොමිලේ දීලා, මුලු රටේම පඩි වැඩි කරොත් කරේ තියන් නටයි. මම මස් කන එකත් තහනම් කරලා, අරක්කු බොන එකත් තහනම් කරලා දැම්මොත් ලංකාවෙ මිනිස්සු ප්‍රභාකරන් පැත්තකින් තියලා මාව මරණවා.
මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ ගැනත් එච්චරම තමයි මිනිස්සුන්ගේ මතේ. රනිල් වික්‍රමසිංහ හිටිය කාලෙත් එච්චරයි.
කව්රුවත් කැමති නෑ ජනාධිපති කරණ හැම දේකටම. කරණ හරියෙන් වැඩි හරියක් අපි කැමති දේවල් නම් තමයි ඉතින් පැවැත්මක් තියෙන්නේ. අපිට හරි කියලා හිතෙන හෑම දේම අනික් මිනිස්සුන්ට හරි යන්නේ නෑ. අනික් මිනිස්සුන්ව අපිට ඕනේ විදිහට තියන්න අපිට අයිතියකුත් නෑ.
වැඩි දෙනෙකුට ඕනේ ලාබෙට කාලා, ගෙවල් දොරවල් හදාගෙන, යාන වාහන අරගෙන අඩුවෙන් වැඩ කරලා, මැරෙන්නේ නැතුව, ගුටි කන්නේ නැතුව ජීවත් වෙන්ට. රටේ ඒකීය භාවයයි, මාධ්ය නිදහසයි, මානව අයිතිවාසිකමුයි ඔක්කොම ඊට පස්සේ.
දැන් රටේ යුද්දයක්. කොටින්ට රටෙන් කැල්ලක් ගියා කියලා අපිට පාන් ද? රට කැඩුණා කියලා? එකට තිබ්බ නම් අපි යනවද මුලතිව් ඉඩම් ගන්ට? නෑ නේ.
අපි මේ සල්ලි නැතුව, කන්ට නැතුව අමාරුවෙන් ගැට ගහගෙන ඉද්දී උන් ආවා මිනී මරන්ටයි රටේ කෑලි ඉල්ලන්ටයි. හරියට උන්ට විතරයි වගේ කන්ට නැත්තේ. උන්ට විතරද ආණ්ඩුවෙන් කෙනෙහෙලි කම් කරේ? ඉතින් අපිට තද වෙන්නේ නැද්ද? ඉතින් අපිත් පටන් ගත්තා යුද්දේ... ඊට පස්සෙ නිජබිම් ද නැත්ද, ආදි වාසීන් කව්ද, උපන් බිමේ නියම උරුමක්කාරයින් කව්ද, ප්‍රශ්ණ ගොඩයි.
ඒ මදිවට උන් හින්දා ඉස්සර තරම් වත් අපිට මෙහෙ කාලා ඇඳලා ඉන්ටත් නෑ. රටේ සල්ලි වැඩි හරියක් යන්නේ උන්ට ගහන්ට. නවත්තලා හිටියත් උන් ඇවිත් ගහලා යනවා. රටේ දේපොල විනාස කරණවා; ඒකෙන් අපේ ජීවණ වියදම වැඩි වෙනවා. ඉතින් උන්ට නොගහා පුලුවන් ද? මොන කෙන්ගෙඩියක් කරලා හරි ඕක ඉවර කරලා දාන්ට ඕනේ.
අපේ හිටිය එක නායකයෙක් වත් යුද්දේ ඉවරයක් කරන්ට වැඩක් කරේ නෑ. රාජපක්ෂට කලින් හිටිය හැම කෙනාම කරේ තව කාලයක් යුද්දේ ඇදගෙන යන්ට පුලුවන් විදිහට කටයුතු කරපු එක. මේ මනුස්සයා අඩුම තරමින් මේක ඉවරයක් කරයි කියලා බලාපොරොත්තුවක් වත් තියන්ට පුලුවන්. ඒක ඉවර වෙද්දි තව මොනවා ඉවර වෙයි ද කියලා නම් සැකයි තමයි. ඒත් සැකයේ වාසිය මනුස්සයට දෙන්ට මම කැමතී.
පහුගිය අවුරුද්දේම මම ලංකාවෙ හිටියේ නෑ. හබැයි ආරන්චිය ලංකාවෙ අලුතෙන් පාරවල් හදනවා ලු. සංවර්ධන වියාපෘති යනවා ලු. ඉතින් මට ඒකත් හොඳයි.
හැබැයි ඉතින් ඇමති මණ්ඩලේ මැරයෝ පිරිලා. ආණ්ඩුවේ ඉන්න තරමක් ඉන්නේ හොර තක්කඩි. රාජපක්ෂලාට විරුද්දව කාටවත් කතා කරන්ට බැරිලු (මම විරුද්ධව කතා කරලා, ඇත්ත ද බොරුද බලන්ට අදහසක් නෑ. නිකම් මොකට ද...). මාධ්ය මර්ධණය කරලා ලු (ඒකට නම් මට ගාණක් වත් නෑ...). මානව හිමිකම් කැඩෙනවා ලු. බඩු හැම දෙයක්ම ගණන් ගිහින් ලු.
මම ඉතින් ඕක සාධාරණීකරනය කරනවා නෙවෙයි; ඒ උනත්, යූ ඇන් පිය ආණ්ඩුව පෙරලන්නේ කොයි වෙලේද කියලා බලන් ඉන්නේ. ආණ්ඩුවේ ඉන්න මන්ත්‍රීලා කොයි වෙලේද කීයක් හරි අරන් අනික් පැත්තට පනින්නේ කියලා බලාගෙන ඉන්නේ. ඉතින් ඉන්න හාල්පාරුවෝ ටික කොහොම හරි ගාල් කරගෙන යුද්දේ ඉවර වෙනකම් ආණ්ඩුව අල්ලගෙන ඉන්නවා නම් හොඳයි කියලයි මට හිතෙන්නේ.
යුද්දේ ඉවර වෙනකම් පොඩ්ඩක් ඉවසගෙන හිටපල්ලා කිව්වොත් අපේ මිනිස්සු අර සුපුරුදු කවිය කියනවා,
"they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;
And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;
And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew; And then . . .
they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up."
අනේ මන්දා... මට නම් හිතෙන්නේ ඔය කවි කිය කියා ආණ්ඩුව පෙරලන්න හදන්නේ යුද්දේ නවත්තන්න කියලා. මේ පාරත් බැරි උනොත් යුද්දේ ඉවර කරන්න ආයෙ නම් වාරයක් හම්බෙයි ද කියලා සැකයි. ඒක නිසා මේ වෙලාවේ ආණ්ඩුව පෙරලෙනවට මම කැමති නෑ.
මගේ මුළු ජීවිත කාලේම ඔය යුද්දේ තිබ්බා. යුද්දේ යද්දිත් රට පොඩ්ඩ පොඩ්ඩ දියුණු උනා. යුද්දේ නැති උනොත් මීට වඩා රට දියුණු වෙයි කියලා බලාපොරොත්තු වෙන්ට පුලුවන්. රටේ වියදමත් අඩු වෙයි, ආදායමත් වැඩි වෙයි.
මොන හාල්පාරුවා ජනාධිපති වෙලා (දේශපාලනය කරන හැම එකාම හාල්පාරුවෝය) රට කරන්ට ආවත් හොඳ වගේම නරකත් තියෙනවා. අනික තනි මිනිහෙකුට රටක් පාලනය කරන්ට බෑ. ඒකට එකතු වෙන උන් ඔක්කොම හීලෑ වෙලා ඉන්නෙත් නෑ. උන්ව ආංබාං කරන්ට හැදුවොත් උන් පිටට පිහියෙන් ඇනලා විපක්ෂෙට යනවා...
එහෙම බලපුහාම ඔය යන හැටි හොඳයි. යුද්දේ ඉවර උනාම තව හොඳ වෙයි. ඊට පස්සේ එක්කො මහින්ද හැදේයි නැත්තම් වෙන නායකයෙක් හැදෙයි. දෙකෙන් කොයික උනත් මට කමක් නෑ යුද්දේ ඉවර උනාට පස්සේ.

ඉතින් සිරසට ගහලා ලසන්තව මරලා කියනවා නේද?
මටත් ඉතින් ඕක ආරන්චි උනා.. එත් මේ කිලිනොච්චිය අල්ලපු ජොලියට ඕක ගාණක් ගියේ නෑ. පස්සේ බැලින්නම් මේ සිද්දි දෙකටත් කට්ටිය පිල් බෙදිලා රණ්ඩුව නේ. ෆේස් බුක් එකේ පවා මේකට පිල්!
සමහරු කියනවා ආණ්ඩුවෙන් ලු කරේ. තව කණ්ඩායමක් කියනවා ගහපු එක හරි ලු!
මැරවින් ජනාධිපති උණා නම් ඔන්න ආණ්ඩුවෙන් ගැහුවා කියලා හිතන්න පුලුවන්. මහින්ද රාජපක්ෂ මැරයා තමයි... හැබැයි මෝඩ තකතීරු මැරයෙක් නෙවෙයි.
උන්දෑ කරානම් මොකක් හරි නීතියක් පිටින් දාලා සිරස වහලා ආණ්ඩුවට පවර ගනියි. සිරසේ ලොක්කෝ හිරේ දායි. අලිමන්කඩත් අල්ලපු එකේ, ඒකේ උනුසුමෙන් එහෙම දෙයක් කරන එක කජ්ජක් ද?
යූ ඇන් පිය ආණ්ඩුව පෙරලන්නේ කොයි වෙලේද කියලා බලන් ඉන්නේ. ඉන්න මන්ත්‍රීලා කොයි වෙලේද අනික් පැත්තට පනින්නේ කියලා බලාගෙන ඉන්නේ. ඉතින් දෙයියනේ ආණ්ඩුව අල්ලගේන ඉන්න එකත් ලේසි නැතුව ඇති රාජපක්ෂ මහත්තයාට. ඒකෙන් වෙන්නේ ගොන් මූසල හැතිකරේ ඔක්කෝගේම ඕනෑ එපාකම් ආණ්ඩුවේ එකවුන්ට් එකෙන් පිරිමහන්ට වෙන එක. ඒකෙන් ප්‍රයෝජනේ අරගෙන යූ ඇන් පි කාරයොත් වෙන්නේ මොකක්ද, ඒක ආණ්ඩුවේ පිටට දාන්ට තමයි හදන්නේ.
ඕක කරේ ආණ්ඩු පක්ෂෙ එකෙක් නම් ආයෙ දෙකක් නෑ ඉතින් රූපවාහිනියට ගහපු මෑන්ම තමයි.
හැබැයි ආණ්ඩුවෙන් නොකරා වෙන්ටත් ලොකු චාන්ස් එකක් තියෙනවා. කවුද දන්නේ... තමන්ගේ එකා මරලා හරි රජ වෙන්ට බලන මිනිස්සුත් ඉන්නවා නේ...
ලංකාවේ මාධ්ය (යුනිකෝඩ් වල යන්සේ නැද්ද?) නිදහසක් නම් නෑ තමයි. හැබැයි ඉතින් ලන්කාවේ මාධ්ය කාරයොන්ට සදාචාරෙකුත් නෑ නේ. ලියන්ට ගියාම ඕනෑ එකයි එපා එකයි ඔක්කෝම ලියනවා. ඒක නිසා ඔය පුවත් වාරණය කරාට නම් මගේ විරුද්ධත්වයක් නෑ ඔන්න. මොකද මාධ්ය නිදහසට වඩා (වැඩි දෙනෙකුට) නොමැරී ඉන්න තියෙන අයිතිය වටිනවා නේ.
හැබැයි මේ සිරසට ගහපු එක හරි කියලා කියන එක නම් වැරදි. සිරස කියන්නේ මට එපාම කරපු චැනල් එකක් තමයි. ඉතින් නොබලා හිටියම ඉවරනේ. බලන්ට ඕනේ උන් බලන් නැතෑ... එහෙම ගහලා කාගේ හරි දේපලක් විනාස කරලා දාන එක හරි කියනවා නම්, හොරකම්, මිණී මැරුම්, ස්ත්‍රී දූෂණත් හරි වෙන්ට ඕනේ.
ඇයි අපේ මිනිස්සු දේශපාලණය ගාව ගන්නේ නැතුව ඔය සිද්දිය මනින්නේ නැත්තේ?
සිරසට ගැහුවේ, ලසන්තව මැරුවේ, දේශපාලණ හේතු නිසා වෙන්න ඇති... ඒත් දේශපාලණය පැත්තකින් තිබ්බම ඒ කාරණා දෙකම සමාජ සම්මතයෙන්ම වැරදි නේ ද? මොන රටක නීතියෙන් උනත් මිනී මැරුම බරපතල වරදක් නේ. අනුන්ගේ දේපල විනාස කරන එකත් ඒ වගේම වරදක්. ඒවා සාධාරණී කරණය කරන්න තරම් අපේ මිනිස්සු දේශපාලණයෙන් අන්ධ වෙලාද?
සිරසට ගහපු එක හරි කියලා එලිපිට ප්‍රකාෂ කරන, ඒ වෙනුවෙන් සමාජ කණ්ඩායම් හදා ගන්න අයගේ ගේවල් වලට පැනලා බඩු මුට්ටු කුඩුපට්ටම් කරොත් හරි ද?
අර කලින් දවසක සෑම් කිව්වා වගේ, අපේ රට නම් හදන්ට පුලුවන් රටක් නෙවෙයි.
සමහරු කියනවා ආණ්ඩුවෙන් ලු කරේ. තව කණ්ඩායමක් කියනවා ගහපු එක හරි ලු!

I hope you'd pay me back...
Someone asked for a loan today. Checked my accounts and I can afford to do that.
But that also made me realize that during the last year I've given closer to one million SLR in interest free - liability free - security free loans to friends and a good 750K SLR of it is still to be returned. That's a hell a lot of money for a poor middle class guy like me. Those who know me knows that I'm always broke.
And most of all; that’s my hard earned money for which I have sacrificed my happiness, being with the family (including dogs and cats), somewhat of health (I have allergies and colds sometimes) and most probably a Nikon 400mm f/2.8G ED AF-S VR (No I'm not kidding. I want that; and would have bought that if I had the money.)
I know the times are hard and going is tough. But if you don't re-pay... you'd be born a donkey in the next life and would have to pull my cart... I hate to say no when someone asks for a loan. But soon I'll have to.
Those who borrowed recently; I'm not really referring to you, even though that 750k is including that. Some loans were give almost a year ago.
True, I said pay when you can. But I wasn't expecting next life.
It's going to be really embarrassing for every one if I have to ask in person.
And don't call and ask does it include you... Don't talk about it in person... Don’t send IMs and emails saying you’d pay it. I hate that. But I want my money back. Period.

The way we screw requirements up.
My previous job was at a small software firm. They had no software development process at all. There was couple of people who mainly interacted with the customer to get the requirements. They spend few days with the customer discussing; and then sit with the developer for half an hour and ask him to write it! No documentation; no diagrams; no nothing. Write this. Once in a while they’d check what’s going on; show the customer what’s going on and change few things here and there and that’s it!...
Needless to say; we never made correct estimates; we never delivered what we initially thought the system was and very little number of customers came back. The applications were not designed at all. They were ad-hoc code with only the blessings of the skills of the developer.
That sucked… So I joined this company which has a pretty matured software development process. It defines how to capture requirements in different scenarios and conducts periodic audits to make sure that everyone is on track. Pretty neat eh? This all works well when everyone involved in it is committed and competent (almost all committed people are competent and almost all un-committed people are incompetent. Once in a while there’s a committed but incompetent person and a competent but un-committed one.)
But requirement capturing was a nightmare in the last two projects I worked in. Why? Some smart-ass thought anyone with CIMA or a MBA, who’s fluent in English, could be a BA. They simply didn’t know reasoning or probability. They just wrote what they heard. (I’m pretty sure they didn’t understand a thing what the customer wanted. But they didn’t know how to ask a question so that there won’t be ambiguity)
So what’s the end product? A big pile of documents that has no value at all and several wasted months (this is no small deal; one project had two BAs who wasted three months and the other had 5(!) BAs who wasted 10 months!!).
So; to think of it; the first company did less damage to the customer and the developers than the second.
So what really works?
A requirement capturing process practiced by professional BAs or Software Architects. That works really well - I’ve seen that. So; if you have any stake in a software project, make sure that you are talking with someone who’s capable of translating your requirements in to something that developers understand. Otherwise you’d just be wasting time and money - a lot of it (those 5 BAs wasted at least about US$1 million).

Can an offshore software service company benefit from the current financial crisis in the world?
I believe yes. But there’s a certain formula.
First of all; the company should be well managed up till now. There should be 95%+ utilization level and they should already have 2~3 good clients. The engineering staff should be above average, comprised with people who are able to make a difference in a project. A well defined software development process must be being practiced. There should be one or two architects who could really stand by a white board and convince people. Company should be small - 40 to 100 head count.
Just because there’s a financial crisis, it doesn’t mean there aren’t any projects out there. Companies in the US are cutting jobs and eliminating all possible expenses. But they still have projects which are critical for their business. So offshoring is a very cost effective solution with lesser liability for them. If someone can offer them a cheaper, better and faster solution - they’d go for it.
A bigger offshore company is likely to have,
Therefore they are unlikely to be able to offer a competitively better price or a service than a smaller company with good staff.
For a company who can offer a good service for a lesser price (the formula in above); It’s the right time to grow. Most companies are taking a hit and putting raises and promotions on hold. So it’s a great time to hire good people. You shouldn’t hire the people who are let go of; but rather should focus on the people who are already being utilized in other companies. And if your current staff can keep the projects flowing; it’s guaranteed that you’d be able to get good people to get them done.
So for the opportunists - I say “yes, we can”.

Decent apartments for a reasonable rent
That's something that I'm going to miss when I go back to Sri Lanka. I pay $965 per month for my studio apartment. For that; I get a clean apartment with water, electricity, gas and heating; kitchen equipment and most of all, a clean and decent toilet and bath. The old gent downstairs pays the same amount and gets severed the same. So does the guy next door who has a flashy SUV.
I've been living in rented annexes and flats in Sri Lanka for the last 6+ years; and that has been the most hateful part of living in Colombo for me. To start with; finding a decent place in suburbs is next to impossible. A decent toilet and a bath is certainly too much to ask for it seems. And if for some miracle I find one; they are freaking expensive for my budget. (I know there are decent apartments in Colombo; but I can't afford to pay $1000 for an apartment in SL) And those places are often owned by lower middle class people who are always on the look out to rob you in every possible way. They always make sure you are at the losing end of the deal - and no, there isn’t any situation in there that nobody wins or loses.
I've been bad at managing my expenses. I don't waste money but somehow I tend to spend it really fast. Had I've been a little more conscious; I should have been able to buy a place somewhere close to Colombo; but again that's a different story.
So apartments are one thing that I like about here. If I ever move here - which I don't have any plans of right now - I'd rent an apartment overlooking the central park. Those are awesome. Right now; they are too expensive for me. About $2500 - $3000 for a studio I hear. But they are nice. I could have couple of dogs and walk them in the park every evening... ah... that would have been nice.
Had I had a decent place to stay in Colombo, I can live with the rest of it. People are rude and most of them try to con you. Everywhere is polluted and most places stink. Driving around is really stressful and cops are corrupted; so is every other government official - I hate having to go into the provincial council to get the car license renewed - just because the officials there pisses me off. But I can live with that. That’s home. It would improve one day. That I dream of... And I want to work towards achieving that dream. So I want to be there - Home.

Near port authority
Port authority is the main bus terminal in Manhattan. That's where I get on and off from the bus in New York in my daily commute to office. This is across the street on 40th Street and 8th Avenue.
