Cow's milk and water

Couple of days back, I saw 500ml tetra packs of full cream milk by Kotmale dairies at Cargills and took couple of them home to try out. It was pure milk with no added flavors. I had one this morning and it was OK.

I always wanted to drink a lot of fluid in the morning because it's supposed to be a healthy habit. But I could never drink more than one cup of water, but I drank the whole 500ml of milk. So that's good.

Thinking of doing it every morning, I checked the price of it. It was just Rs. 35/-!!! Now a 500ml bottle of mineral water costs Rs. 40/-...

So milk is cheaper than water...

  1. That is very interesting.

Actually over here, wine (well at least the cheap stuff) is cheaper than water.

Back to the main reason I'm commenting: watch your cholesterol. Milk is good for you, but don't take it to extremes!

I think drinking more "fluids", means drinking pure water.

I have noticed Sri Lankans from and urban environment don't eat alot of fruits, vegetables and pulses. That is even more important.

  3. I see.

Can't you buy fat free milk in Sri Lanka?

Also, nuts, lentils, beans, tofu (from soy products) is high in protein and low in cholesterol.

Yoghurt or curd is also good in moderation. Read somewhere that cholesterol has slighly less harmful effects in fermented milk products.

Mushrooms are also good because they have a special kind of protein and good iron content.

Since you are having back pain as well, for pain and inflammation there is scientific evidence that food high in omega-3 is very good for you. They also say you should cut down on omega-6 that is found in processed food.

Does strict vegetarian also mean no egg?

This link gives some advice on vegetarian diet.

  4. The problem with milk is that it takes a bacteria in teh gut to digest and most people lose that in their childhood.

For nutritional purposes I ahev been told the processed milk like cheese and yoghurt where part of the digestion has already been done by bacteria are better. ie the body can actually absorb the nutrients inthe milk better.

Liquid milk is best in small doses, maybe 200ml or so.

  6. I think what you've heard is that Hydrotherapy is good for you and because of being unable to drink a lot of water in the morning you've gone and invented "Lactotherapy" :)

The main reason that it is difficult to drink a lot of water in the morning is because when you drink it the conventional way the tastebuds on your tongue get satiated and that sort of puts an end to your resolution to drink a lot. Two things I can recommend is
    1) Use water that is a little warm
    2) Drink the water having your tongue pressed to your pallet, this sort of bypasses the tastebuds.

As for milk, there is a friend of mine who is a GP, who maintains that milk is meant for growing up and not for grown-ups (be it people or other mamels. His recommendation is in order to gain the nutrition of milk, adults should take milk derivatives (cheese, Butter, Yogurt etc.) insted of pure milk.

  8. There is a bigger issue here, which if you wish I can elaborate on later. I only get Rs18/- a liter for my cows milk from Milco and at the moment I am losing money on selling to them as my costs exceed my income.

  11. rajarata goviya,

Just looked at your blog. It is very interesting. Don't have google account at the moment (sorry Mahasen, for using your blog will rectify it soon), so couldn't comment there.

Have a look at this link:

Over here we don't drink much powdered milk. Some people in my family like it when they want a nice cup of milky sri lankan tea!

By the way, I prefer to buy local produce or Sri Lankan produce because of the strict GM policies. We get alot of imports from China, India and US, which I try to avoid.
