Cricket

I came to office at 7.30 A.M. this morning. The office was deserted. Not even the security guard was at the door. Usually by 8.30 A. M. there are 15~20 people in the office. But today - none. There are quite a few Sri Lankan blogs updated early this morning at around 3.15 to 3.30 A. M. Most news syndications have posts on the world cup semi finals cricket match between Sri Lanka and New Zealand yesterday.

That's the impact cricket has on Sri Lankans. I'm pretty sure cricket history of Sri Lanka is just a little more than couple of hundred years, but 99% of the country is mad about the sport.

Even people who have never played cricket, who doesn't really know what's what in the game still stay awake the whole night to watch a match. That's remarkable isn't it?

What created this passion for this game? What aspects of the game attract these minds? Ever gave it a thought? Does it have any thing to do with advertising and the sub culture that has evolved around the sport? Or is it because we (Sri Lanka) have good players?

What ever it is, I believe its worth to do a thorough analysis on that factor. Especially if some one needs to create a collective mind set among Sri Lankans for some thing else. Some thing like – fighting terrorism.

  1. Cricket is a sport and do some own research on what is meant to be a sport. No need of fusther analysis if people are getting entertained beacuse of this game.

Does your post imply that you fall into the 1% category of the country? (if 99% of the country do watch cricket and you post something against that)

Yes, we do have Best players (not good players you are thinking about). Even without knowing correct facts and what people like why do you want to create a collective mind set?

  3. I can't understand what "Anonymous" talks about. It was a very valid post by Mahasen.Yes we need to create a same sort of passion for the fight against terrorism.

  4. Yes. There is no question about cricket here, Cricket has to go as it is. It entertains our people, earns money, earns reputation for country, increases investments through that, promotes tourism and increases our pride as a nation. So it has to go on. But Mahasen's point is something else, which is very valid. He is questioning why cant we apply the same succesful model to other things. In IT terms, this is POC (Proof of Concept). That model is an example for many other things,a symbol of peace and success. It has proven that we can do things at highest possible level provided we work together. So, definitly yes, if we do things together, we can achieve success. Why was it so succesful? I think the basic reason is that everyone works together to achieve a common goal, on top of that our talent puts icing on the cake!
